Thermoelastic effect | Thermoelasticity applied to stress concentrations | cv47.org

Thermoelastic effect is the temperature change resulting from stretching or contracting of an elastic material.

Project Description -

Analyzing and determining stress concentrations in components forms a very important part of the design life cycle of a component. Machine/ Structural components rarely form perfect

convex geometries and have to be adapted to aesthetic and design constraints to have uneven cross-sectional areas. The irregularities in geometries/ departure from the pure convex shape result in notches, where stress concentrations arise, i.e., areas where the

stress is much higher than in the neighbourhood. These areas of stress concentrations are places where the component starts to fail, i.e., cracks begin to appear.

Objective of project -

The objective of the project is to quantify stress concentrations and characterize the stress state in a notched component subject to external loads/ stresses and temperature variations.

Physics interfaces involved -

1. Solid mechanics

2. Heat transfer through solids

Boundary conditions -

1. Fixed constraint

2. Temperature

3. Edge load
